A portrait can look great until you need to place it on a website, presentation, profile card, or thumbnail. The original background may clash with the new design or draw attention away from the person.
IMG Free Toolkit’s free Background Remover separates a person from the background and lets you download a transparent PNG. It works in your browser and is best suited to people and portraits. Open the tool here: https://www.imgfreetoolkit.com/background-remover
How to remove a portrait background
Open the Background Remover and add your portrait as a JPG, PNG, or WebP image. If this is your first visit, wait for the cutout model to download and prepare in your browser. Select “Remove Background,” then compare the result with the original photo.

Try our Background Remover
Remove image backgrounds in your browser and download a transparent PNG.
Look closely at hair, shoulders, and the edges of clothing. When you are happy with the result, keep the transparent background setting and download the PNG.
The tool accepts images up to 25 MB each. Your photo is processed on your device rather than uploaded to IMG Free Toolkit’s servers.
Why download a transparent PNG?
A transparent background lets you place your portrait over another color or design without a rectangular box around it. This is useful for team pages, speaker profiles, presentations, and graphics.
Choose PNG when you need transparency. JPEG does not preserve a transparent background. If you need one fixed background color instead, the tool also offers a solid fill option.
What makes a good portrait cutout?
Background removal works best when the person is clearly visible and separated from the surroundings. Start with a reasonably sharp photo that shows the person’s head and shoulders. A background that differs from their hair and clothing can also make the result easier to inspect.
Fine hair, transparent objects, motion blur, and busy scenes can make the edges difficult to separate. If an important detail disappears or some of the old background remains, try a clearer source photo. A complex cutout may need manual touch-up in an image editor.
How to use your transparent portrait
Once you have downloaded the PNG, place it on your website, slide, or profile graphic. Check it against both a light and a dark background. An edge that looks clean on white may be more noticeable on a darker color.
If the portrait is larger than your design needs, set its dimensions with the Image Resizer: https://www.imgfreetoolkit.com/image-resizer
If you need a smaller file for a website, try the Image Compressor and check that the exported image still has the transparency you need: https://www.imgfreetoolkit.com/image-compressor
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove the background from a JPG portrait?
Yes. Add the JPG to the Background Remover, process it, and download the transparent result as a PNG. You can open the tool at https://www.imgfreetoolkit.com/background-remover
Does it work on profile pictures and headshots?
Yes. People and portraits are the tool’s best use case. Review the result before using it, especially around hair and clothing.
Is my portrait uploaded to a server?
No. Image processing happens in your browser, and your image stays on your device. The first run may download a cutout model to your browser.
Can I remove the background from a product photo or logo?
You can try, but this tool is optimized for people and portraits. Product photos, logos, and complicated scenes may need additional editing.
Why does my downloaded image appear to have a white background?
Check the PNG in a viewer that displays transparency. Also confirm that you downloaded the transparent result rather than choosing a solid fill color. Some image previews display white behind transparent areas.
