Target size: 40 KB
Soft ceiling — we keep quality as high as possible while staying at or under 40KB when possible. Results show Met target or Above target from the real file size.
Output format
PNG input is currently exported as WebP by this compressor so quality controls can shrink the file—not PNG-preserving. Need JPEG instead? PNG to JPG, then compress.

Guide
How it works & what to know
Practical details about this tool — written for people and search engines alike.
A 40KB ceiling is among the strictest photo caps on ID portals and application forms. Readable results are still possible for a tightly cropped head-and-shoulders portrait, but busy backgrounds and large dimensions fight the limit hard.
After compression, check the Met target / Above target label on each result. If the form also requires 413×531 pixels, use Passport Photo Under 40KB so both size and frame rules are handled together.
Met target means the downloaded file is 40KB or smaller. Above target means the closest usable encode still exceeded 40KB after quality and dimension steps—download that closest file or try a tighter crop / the next larger limit page.
Never treat a soft ceiling as a guaranteed exact size. Portals that reject oversized uploads need the Met target badge before you submit.
For tight 40–50KB caps, crop tightly and prefer JPG for photos before compressing—fewer pixels make the limit easier to hit with less blur.
Photos with large flat areas (skies, walls) compress more easily than busy textures. If you stay Above target, try the next larger target page or a lower-resolution source.

FAQ
Quick answers about privacy, formats, and what this tool can do.
No guarantee. This tool aims for 40KB or under by lowering quality and, when needed, dimensions. Results show Met target or Above target from the real output size—very detailed images may stay Above target with the closest size and a short note.
Smaller targets need stronger compression. Start with 40KB here; if quality looks too soft, try Compress Image to 50KB or resize dimensions first with the Image Resizer.
No. Images are processed on your device—no image files are uploaded to our servers.
JPG/JPEG, PNG, and WebP. Each file can be up to 25 MB, and you can process up to 20 images in one bulk run. PNG input is exported as WebP on multi-format target pages (not PNG-preserving).
If the file is already 40KB or smaller, we still run a light optimization so you get a consistent download—often without changing the look much. The result still shows Met target.
Often yes for a tightly cropped head-and-shoulders JPG. If your form also needs 413×531 pixels, use Passport Photo Under 40KB so both checks pass. Always confirm the official form’s rules.
