Passport Photo Size & Dimensions: US, UK, India and More
Passport photo size dimensions by country: US 2×2 in, UK/EU 35×45 mm, India often 413×531 px. See the chart, then resize safely for uploads.
Quick answer: Passport photo size dimensions depend on the country. The US uses a 2×2 inch square. The UK and most Schengen/EU passports use 35×45 mm. Many Indian digital forms use a 35×45 mm frame at about 413×531 pixels. Print size (mm/in), pixel size, and file size (KB) are three different checks—match the ones your form lists.
Need an exact frame and KB cap? Use a private browser tool for passport photos under 40KB, Schengen visa photos, or DS-160 photos—nothing uploads to a server.
Common passport photo sizes (chart)
Country / use | Print size | Typical digital pixels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
United States | 2 × 2 in | Often 600 × 600 | Square crop |
United Kingdom | 35 × 45 mm | ~413 × 531 at 300 DPI | Same frame as many EU photos |
Schengen / many EU | 35 × 45 mm | ~413 × 531 | Portals often add a KB cap |
India (many online forms) | 35 × 45 mm | Often 413 × 531 | Some portals also demand ~40KB |
Canada | 50 × 70 mm | Varies by channel | Check IRCC instructions |
Always trust the instructions on your application over a generic chart. Rules change, and some portals invent their own pixel + KB combo.

United States (2 × 2 inches)
US passport and many US visa photos are a 2 × 2 inch square. For digital uploads, that often means a 600 × 600 pixel JPEG with a file-size ceiling (common for DS-160 / CEAC-style forms: under 240KB).
If CEAC says the photo is too large, resize the square first, then compress—don’t only shrink the file while leaving a huge pixel canvas.

United Kingdom and Schengen / EU (35 × 45 mm)
UK passport photos and most Schengen-style biometric photos use 35 × 45 mm. At 300 DPI, that print size is about 413 × 531 pixels.
Some consulate portals also enforce a maximum file size (often around 240KB). The frame and the KB limit are separate—pass both.

India (common digital frame)
Indian passport print rules and online form rules are not always identical. Many exam, job, and ID portals ask for a passport-style photo near 413 × 531 pixels and a small JPEG—sometimes capped at 40KB.
If your form only says “40KB” with no pixel size, compress only. If it lists both pixels and KB, crop to the frame first, then compress.

How millimetres become pixels
Pixels ≈ (millimetres ÷ 25.4) × DPI.
Example at 300 DPI:
35 mm → ~413 px
45 mm → ~531 px
2 in → 600 px
Portals sometimes ask for a lower DPI or a different pixel box. When they give an exact pixel size, use that number—don’t guess from millimetres alone.
Dimensions vs file size (KB)
Check | What it means | Typical fail |
|---|---|---|
Print size | Physical height × width | Wrong aspect ratio / crop |
Pixels | Width × height in the file | Too big or too small for the upload |
File size | Kilobytes of the JPEG | “File too large” even if pixels look right |
A photo can be the correct millimetres on a ruler and still fail an upload if the JPEG is oversized—or the reverse.
How to resize for an upload
Read the form: note mm/in, exact pixels, and any KB limit.
Crop to the correct aspect (square for US 2×2; 35×45 for UK/EU/India-style).
Resize to the required pixels.
Compress only as much as needed to hit the KB cap.
Export JPEG unless the form asks for something else.

FAQ
What size is a passport photo in the US?
2 × 2 inches, usually delivered as a square digital photo (often 600 × 600 pixels for online forms).
What size is a UK or Schengen passport photo?
35 × 45 mm (about 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI). Check your portal for any KB limit.
Is 413 × 531 the same as a passport photo?
It matches a common 35 × 45 mm digital frame used by many UK/EU and Indian-style uploads. It is not the US 2 × 2 square.
Do passport photos have a fixed KB size?
Some forms ignore KB; others reject anything over 40KB, 100KB, or 240KB. Follow the number on your form.
Can I use one photo for every country?
Usually not. US photos are square; UK/EU photos are 35 × 45 mm. Always match the destination country’s rules.
