Shopify Product Image Widths & Compression Tips
Prepare Shopify product photos at the right width before theme uploads re-encode them.
Shopify stores live or die on product photos—but oversized files make collection pages crawl on mobile. Shopify image optimization means preparing product, variant, and banner images to sensible dimensions, compressing them, and writing useful alt text before (or when) you upload to the admin.
Quick answer: For Shopify, prepare product images near your theme’s large image width, compress after resize, and prefer JPG/WebP for photos. Themes often re-encode uploads—export once from a master at the right width so you don’t stack compression. Use cutouts only when the theme needs transparent PNGs.
To set product image dimensions before you compress, use the Image Resizer. Processing stays in your browser for normal use.

Shopify image sizes that usually work
Exact theme widths vary, but these starting points keep most Online Store 2.0 themes sharp without multi‑megabyte uploads:
Product photos: about 2048px on the long edge is a common Shopify-oriented target (square or consistent aspect ratio across the catalog).
Collection / lifestyle banners: match your theme’s banner width; often 1600–2000px wide is enough.
Thumbnails: let Shopify generate them—your job is a clean master file, not a separate tiny export for every breakpoint.
Use the Image Resizer to standardize a folder of product shots before bulk upload.
Compress without making products look cheap
After resizing, compress with the Image Compressor on Balanced. Zoom the product edges and labels. If a marketplace or wholesale form elsewhere needs a hard KB cap, use Compress Image to 200KB or 100KB—those limits are rarer inside Shopify itself but common in partner portals.
Backgrounds and cutouts for catalogs
Many brands want a clean white or transparent product shot. Remove clutter with the Background Remover, download a transparent PNG when you need it, or place the subject on white in your editor. For people/models, see remove portrait background.
Formats: JPG, PNG, and what Shopify serves
Photograph products as JPG (or convert with PNG to JPG when a PNG is really a photo). Keep PNG for graphics that need transparency. Shopify may serve modern formats to supporting browsers from your uploaded masters—still upload optimized files so the source is not enormous.
Alt text that helps shoppers and accessibility
Describe the product in plain language: “Red ceramic mug with speckled glaze, handle on the right.” Do not paste a keyword list. Good alt text helps screen-reader users and gives search engines context without spam.
Shopify upload workflow
Shoot or export consistent lighting and aspect ratio.
Resize to a shared master width.
Compress.
Optional: remove background for packshots.
Name files by SKU or product (blue-linen-shirt-front.jpg).
Upload in Shopify Admin → Products (or Files for banners).
Add alt text per image.
Check the product page on a phone.
Worked example: one SKU with four images
For a single product with a hero and three angles:
- Shoot or export masters at consistent lighting.
- Resize heroes to your theme’s recommended width (often 2048 px on the long side—confirm in the theme docs).
- Compress JPEGs for photos; keep PNG only for graphics with transparency.
- Upload the optimized set; let Shopify’s CDN negotiate modern formats to supporting browsers from a clean source file.
Huge unoptimized masters slow admin uploads and first paint even when Shopify re-encodes later. Clean inputs still win.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best image size for Shopify products?
A practical master is often around 2048px on the long edge with a consistent aspect ratio. Confirm against your theme’s documentation if you use a custom banner-heavy theme.
Does Shopify compress images for me?
Shopify optimizes delivery, but huge source files still hurt admin uploads, apps, and some rendering paths. Prepare files first.
Should every product use a transparent PNG?
Only when you need transparency or a cutout. Photographic PNGs are often larger than JPG for the same look.
